Celebrating National Limerick Day

When I'm looking for ideas to write about,  I sometimes check out the National Day Calendar.  I always find something interesting there. Yesterday, I found this:

"Observed annually on May 12th, National Limerick Day celebrates the birthday of English artist, illustrator, author, and poet Edward Lear (May 12, 1812 – Jan. 29, 1888).  Lear is known mostly for his literary nonsense in poetry, prose, and limericks."

Silly limericks can be fun to read, but I had an idea for a topic with a more somber tone.

The first weekend of May was cold, dark, and rainy.  It was so gloomy outside, our plans had to be cancelled. That led to this poem.

A big thank you to Rose at Imagine the Possibilities for hosting today's Poetry Friday.

Have a great weekend!

  1. Limerick day has rolled by
Linda knew that, but not I
Till I dropped by her site
    And read 'bout her plight
On a day with a grey wintry sky

We may be separated by distance, but today is cold and miserable where I am, so I could relate to your limerick. Thanks for telling us about this day - I did not know about it.

  10. I like any limerick that's not about an old man with an [item]! Nice one, Carol.

  14. Dearest Linda -sending you sunshine and temps of 82 today! But you probably want me to stop there; we're due for 90s all next week. I sent a screenshot of the TV 7-day forecast this morning to our kiddos, saying the copywriter seemed challenged at coming up with descriptors. It went like this: heating up; hot & sunny; hot & sunny; even hotter; hot day; still hot .... ;0) There's probably a limerick in there somewhere. Enjoyed yours - thanks!

    1. Oh, you can send me some sunshine, but please keep the 90s. I don't like the heat. I like sweater weather in the 60s- 70s range. : )

    2. Ha! We'll try to keep the hot stuff down here....

  15. Linda, I enjoyed reading your poem. It had a good measure of voice. (I read your blog and wrote this comment but then got sidetracked by my little grandaughters who were with me since last Wednesday. I guess you can understand.) Would you consider offering your image poem for my Poetryliscious Gallery Padlet? Let me know via cvarsalona at gmail. Thanks.
