I’m excited to share GREAT MORNING! Poems for School Leaders to Read Aloud by Sylvia Vardell and Janet Wong. If you haven't heard about this wonderful resource, check out Catherine Flynn's very informative post on her blog Reading to the Core and on Sylvia's blog Poetry for Children.
I love the idea behind this book. Imagine an entire school starting off the day by sharing a poem! Research has shown that morning announcements set the tone for the day and help build a sense of community. The poems in GREAT MORNING! are perfect for the building bridges that lead to deeper connections and understanding. Poetry is a powerful way to start the day!
I am honored to have a poem included in GREAT MORNING! I spent the last five years of my teaching career as a reading intervention specialist so it means a lot to me to contribute this poem.
What a thrill it was to see the video with Sylvia and Janet reading the book excerpt and my poem at the ILA conference! You can check out the video starring these two fabulous ladies here.
Now to the giveaway! Thanks to the generosity of Janet and Sylvia (who are two of the most generous people on the planet), 3 lucky readers will win a copy of GREAT MORNING!. If you would like to be entered in the giveaway, please leave a comment by August 15. If you would like to increase your chances of winning, become a follower of my blog, and you will be entered twice! Good luck and have a GREAT MORNING!
A big thank you to Molly at Nix the Comfort Zone for hosting today. Be sure to stop by and read her lovely sonnet.
How great to have another post on Great Morning! I am glad that you led me to Sylvia's post where she and Janet are reading from the book. How special to have your poem chosen for the video. After all, it was a reading convention they were at. I did not know that you were a reading intervention specialist. I was a reading teaching/specialist/coach/administrator throughout my entire career and I felt it was so rewarding. You captured the essence of what reading teachers do, Linda. Congratulations on being included in the book.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Carol, and congratulations on your wonderful poem being included too!
DeleteCongrats on having your poignant poem in "Great Morning" Linda! I heard the reading of your poem poem on Sylvia's blog. I think it would be a treat to have a poem on the radio each morning, thanks .
ReplyDeleteThank you, Michelle. Having a poem on the radio each morning would surely make a great morning! : )
DeleteI haven't seen the book yet, but have heard all the buzz. Sylvia and Janet do a wonderful job of collecting poems. They are so generous, too. I love your reading specialist poem. That's exactly what reading specialists do!
ReplyDeleteI agree, Margaret. Janet and Sylvia are two the most generous people I've ever met. They spread love and kindness everywhere they go.
DeleteThis book sounds fabulous and I can't wait to see it! I love your Reading Specialist entry. I've spent a significant amount of time this summer reading about being an even more effective teacher of reading in my Kindergarten class. We really do have to be like a detective gathering clues to move students forward. Well done!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Christie. Kindergarten teachers are so special! I taught Kindergarten for two months once summer, and I know how challenging and rewarding working with those little ones can be!
DeleteCongratulations on your poem in the collection! I love the idea of this book, and your poem is a wonderful addition to it. Following...

ReplyDeleteI gave a copy to my principal just the other day. I can't wait to see how he uses it!
ReplyDeleteOh, I love the idea of this book too. When you think about it, it's pretty amazing that the idea is considered fresh and new. I mean, come on--we should have been basting our leaders in poetry all along. Thank goodness Vardell and Wong remind us to do what needs to be done. I'm thrilled that you have a poem in this book. Bravo! I've shared it on facebook with my educator peeps. I feel future awards for this book in my bones.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a great resource for school leaders. I hope they all get a copy to read from every day! Congratulations on your poem being included and highlighted at ILA. How exciting!
