Poetry Friday: Christmas Surprise

I'm sharing this rough draft of a poem-in-progress today because I think many of you fellow cat lovers can relate. I'm not happy with the first stanza so any suggestions are welcome. : )

Christmas Surprise

She didn't write a letter
she didn't make a list—
but that sneaky cat of mine
had a secret Christmas wish.

She curled herself up cozy
beneath the tinseled tree
waiting there for Santa
and presents brought for me.

When I woke up this morning
ready for a surprise—
it wasn't what I expected
I couldn't believe my eyes.

The bows were all chewed
ribbons torn and tattered
boxes emptied on the floor—
paper ripped and scattered.

Unashamed of what she'd done
I heard her start to purr—
I guess that silly cat believed
the gifts were meant for her.

May the season bring you
many delightful surprises!

Happy Holidays,
Linda

  1. Ha! My cat was curled up under the tree this morning too. When I got up to get my camera she calmly moved away.

  2. I know what you mean. It took me two days to get her to stay under the tree while I snapped her picture.

  3. We don't have our tree yet, so it remains to be seen what our cat will make of it on our first Christmas together! Hopefully, he won't be inspired to climb -- he weighs 16 lbs!!!

  4. We don't have cats anymore :>( but our dog Jack keeps walking under the tree, on top of the presents, to scratch his back on the lower branches. We'll see if the gifts survive unscathed! Merry Christmas, Linda--fun poem!

  5. Linda,

Fortunately, my cat is older and not the least bit interested in Christmas wrappings and ribbons. Merry Christmas!

  6. Mary Lee, Laura and Elaine,

Thank you for your comments. Cats (and dogs) know how to get our attention. My cats keep me very busy!
I hope you had a joyous holiday!
