POETRY FRIDAY IS HERE!

Welcome to the Poetry Friday roundup! Please leave your link in the comments, and I'll round them up throughout the day. This is only my second time hosting so I'll do my best to keep up. 😊

Last week, my doctor recommended a medical test so I scheduled it for this morning.  Until last night, I had completely forgotten about hosting today.  In my younger days, I would have been very upset with myself for messing up.  But now I accept that mistakes are going to happen. All I can do is to learn from them and try to do better next time.   That's a tough lesson to learn, especially for middle school kids who often feel devastated when they make a mistake.

I'm so glad there is a wonderful new anthology to help kids understand that they are not alone in making mistakes. We've all been there.  IMPERFECT edited by Tabatha Yeatts  is a collection of 70 poems written by fifty poets about all kinds of mistakes. I am proud to have a poem included in this important anthology.

Do-Over

When I got paired with the new girl,
I rolled my eyes and groaned.

I was happy when she whispered,
I'll just work alone.

But now I can't stop thinking,
about the sadness in her voice.

If I could do it over,
kindness would be my choice.

Have a great day, and in honor of my Star Wars loving sons:

Well, it looks like there was a mistake in today's hosting schedule.  Originally, I was scheduled to host today, but somehow that was changed on some of our Poetry Friday blogs.  I think what happened is another "Linda" asked to have her date changed, and mine was changed instead of hers. Oh, well, mistakes happen!

Here's what I have for today's roundup. You can find more posts at Brenda's place.

It's a new month, and Michelle is in with a Spotlight ON interview and DMC challenge featuring Julie Fogliano and her latest picture book titled THE HOUSE THAT WAS. (My copy came in yesterday, and I love this book!)

Irene is also celebrating IMPERFECT today on Live Your Poem.

Alice is sharing a rough draft of her poem Poets. Paint.

Sylvia is celebrating today the 4th. with Poetry for Star Wars Day over at Poetry For Children.

That's all I have for now. I'll check in again later today to update.

  1. Hi Linda, I'm so sorry that we crossed our wires. The listing for PF hosts has me for this week: http://kidlitosphere.org/poetry-friday. I think Mary Lee Hahn keeps that list accurate. If I remember right, someone said they couldn't do it, and I offered. I thought it was Linda Mitchell. Then Mary Lee said she would update the list. And sure enough, there I was, due to host today. Are you the Linda who said you couldn't host today? I apologize that my memory isn't as sure as it once was... but it might be confusing if we both say we're hosting. To my knowledge, this hasn't happened before. I won't be around tomorrow because I'm on the road all day. I'll leave my post as is, and hope for the best. May the 4th be with you, too. :-) Best, Brenda

  2. Thanks for hosting, Linda! I immediately fell in love with your poem in IMPERFECT. That's the kind of thing most of us do at one point or another, and it eats away at us the rest of our lives. For me, it was the boy on the lawn playing with the army men. :(

It's a new month, so I've got a new Spotlight ON interview and DMC challenge featuring Julie Fogliano and her latest lyrical picture book titled A HOUSE THAT ONCE WAS. http://michellehbarnes.blogspot.com/2018/05/spotlight-on-julie-fogliano-dmc.html

  4. May the 4th be with you, too, Linda! Thanks for sharing the anthology and your poem. It's a shame that when we regret something, the other person doesn't often know...maybe if we assume the other person is sorry, we'll be right more often than not!

  6. I can't wait to get my hands on this book! Such a great theme and your poem is lovely with a perfect ending! I am a big fan too (like your sons!), so my post today is reinterpreting poems against a Star Wars backdrop! May the 4th be with you! https://poetryforchildren.blogspot.com/2018/05/poetry-for-star-wars-day.html

  7. I really like your poem. Even after many years I wonder and worry about students who say they'll work alone and the subtext to those words.

Regarding the posting confusion: This is my fourth or fifth time linking up to PF. I'm still trying to figure out the protocol. Should i only post about poems for younger children? Is it okay to write and share poetry dealing w/ controversial or sensitive matters? These and other questions perplex me.

  9. Linda, mix-ups do happen but that is life and we keep on going. Imperfect is the just right title for Tabatha's anthology. Congratulations on having your poem selected. Your poem pictures the expression many children have when paired with someone that is not in their "group"=>"I rolled my eyes and groaned." Your last sentence provides the step to take in the future because with reflective action we can move beyond our missteps.

  13. Sorry again for the mixup. In all these years, this is our first snafu. And you got it. Yay? It goes perfectly with your post, though. So there's that.
