Poetry Friday

Last week, my four-year old granddaughter, Evie, read a book to her preschool class during circle time. She was so proud to be able to read it all by herself!
Over the years, I've taught preschool, elementary, and middle school.  One of  the most rewarding experiences for me  is sharing the excitement when a child reads his/her first book.  I wrote this little poem to capture that experience.

First Book

Mommy! Daddy!
Come look, come look--

I'm reading, I'm reading,
I'm reading a book!

I just found it here
on the library shelf
and I can read every word
all by myself.

Mommy! Daddy!
Come look, come look--

I'm reading!

I'm reading
my very first book!

It won't be long before he reads his very first book!

  1. What sweet pictures! And your poem really captures the excitement of stepping foot in a whole new world. I can't remember when I learned to read...so sweet of you to catalog this for these kids. xo

    1. Hi Irene, I can't remember when I learned to read either, but I do remember the FUN WITH DICK AND JANE series we read in first grade. It must have meant a lot to me because I still remember the story. : )

  2. You've captured the joy of reading in this poem. I can still remember one of my daughter's happiness when she read her first book by herself. It was one of the Tiny books by Carl Meister. :-)

    1. Holly, what a great memory to have of your daughter. Children are so proud when they read their first book, and they should be. It's a big accomplishment!

  4. Just a lovely post of excitement reading, Linda. I don't remember what, but do remember reading back & forth with my grandfather who was a big reader & probably taught me more about reading before I went to school. Thanks for capturing this special moment.

  5. Your granddaughter looks so proud, sitting in the teacher's spot. Her body language says it all. I love the poem. She'll treasure the way you have captured this moment when she is older.

  8. Linda, I love the excitement you generated in your poem. Reading your first book is an amazing experience. As a reading specialist for many years before being a districtwide administrator of language arts, I believe in the term lifelong readers. Your poem is the beginning of that journey.
