POETRY FRIDAY: After the Storm

After the Storm

I like watching does
and their fawns trudge
through deep snow to
nibble sparse wet
grass beneath
my deck

I like watching them
balance on thin hind legs
stretching their necks
reaching for last ripe
crabapples on
my tree

And I like watching them
gather into a herd then
stroll back to the woods
leaving behind a
trail of hearts
in the snow

  1. This is lovely! We're digging out from a storm this morning, and I always think of the animals.

    Love that last picture!

  4. A trail of hearts! Brilliant!! Perfect example of an "unexpected inevitable" turn in a poem. I've never thought of that analogy and am delighted by it. Thanks!

  7. Hi Janet, Laura, Jama,Irene, Sheri, and Laura, thank you for your kind words. I love living here with all the wildlife. Sadly, we have to sell our house due to the economy. I'll miss sitting on my deck watching them grow up.

As for the poem, I really wanted to make the shape of the last stanza more consistent with the other two, but I ran out of time last night and gave up. I hope to work on it some more.

I'm glad you liked the photos.

  9. Yes, I, too love that trail of hearts! If you've seen deer tracks, this is a perfect way to describe them.

I also think that the simple formatting change (from the version of this poem on 2/21) from left justify to centering makes this poem more powerful! The new shape really adds to it!

  10. Jone, yes it is very peaceful to watch the deer. We have some beautiful birds here that I like to watch too.

Mary Lee, thanks for letting me know that you think this format is better. I still need to work more on the third stanza, but right now I'm not sure what to do with it.

Jone and Mary Lee, thanks for stopping by.

  11. Isn't it fun that poems can be tweaked, and re-tweaked, and rewritten and presented over and over again? I like this one just as it is, but if you want to work on it, why not?

I thought since you enjoy poetry that I'd invite you to contribute your list of favorite poems to my survey. Read more about it here: http://www.semicolonblog.com/?p=9520
